"4. Transmedia
This is now the preferred term in Hollyweird for what we used to call “cross-platform.” Which means a story or format that can be applied to everything from film and TV to streaming video, apps, books, DVD, audio, whatever. I think 80 percent of the people I talked to in L.A. in July said “transmedia” to me at some point. The term has a broad set of connotations, mostly involving fear. Fear of the degradation of the network-TV model. Fear of DVD sales flattening. Fear of iTunes, the iPad. Fear of pretty much anything in a media environment where the ground seems to shift every five seconds and you don’t know what’s going to slide up from between the cracks in the earth and grab you by the undercarriage. Shotgun storytelling.
