mllesays:

I think all readers have at least one overlooked, non-canonical author who hugely informs their lives — the kind of author who should be much more famous, whose books you press on everyone you know.  Elaine Dundy is that author for me.  The Dud Avocado is literally so good that it’s life-changing.  It represents to me the most you could ever hope to achieve in the genre of the novel.
I’m dying to get time to read her newest reissure from NYRB, The Old Man and Me.  Unfortunately I’m still stuck in Elizabethan England, making little to no daily progress.  Revising for exams is silly, and if it were up to me, Dundy would be someone you’d have to know for the GRE in lit.

The Dud Avacado was the book that got me through my first semester of sophomore year.
