"Fuck the marketing pitch. Basically, in this bold new era of distracted viewing, Fourth Wall is attempting to involve your phone, laptop and/or iPad in the storytelling process; rather than draw you out of whatever you’re watching, they’ll supply you with integral information or a hilarious, if somewhat narratively-extraneous scene (e.g. an accidental visit to Ron Artest’s Metta World Peace’s recording studio) - and the more of these supplements you view, the more achievements you rack up, which in turn allows you to watch more supplemental videos (it’s kind of like competitive viewing). There are a ton of buzzwords that describe what Fourth Wall is up to (transmedia, gamification, etc.), but, basically, provided the primary content is entertaining, it’s just more of a very good thing."

advice on moving to los angeles

Shana made it possible for me to move to LA. Her advice is excellent.

Edited to clarify: her advice to read the full-on ADVICE-ADVICE below. Because my unclear antecedent was bothering me.

shananaomi:

this is one of the only versions of this very common blog topic i’ve seen that gets at the heart of what from outside can look a lot like people being shallow. i LOVE los angeles - living here, working here, how everyone has ideas about what they want to do and be. i wrote a screenplay that was underneath not even about gender or sexuality or my love of pop music as much as it was that desire.

you should read the whole essay, but these are the parts i’m talking about:

rollogrady:

Americans are already quite individualist, but Los Angeles is the most individualist part of America. Because so many people are employed by the entertainment industry, most people are self-employed freelancers. They’re very focused on themselves. People talk about themselves a lot because they feel they have to, for survival, for self-promotion. Just as you can’t fault anyone in the world for doing something for survival, try not to fault them for being so self-promotional. Learn to lovingly listen like you’d listen to an 8-year-old who excitedly tells you about their train set for an hour.

Every culture values different things. In some places, it’s your bloodline. In others, your university. In others, it’s where you live. In LA, it’s who you know. Since the entertainment industry is all about short-term projects, everyone survives by their next project, and these projects always come from a connection. So everyone is collecting contacts. (Again: it’s survival.) Friendships are pragmatic and often short. Don’t fault them for talking about who they know, the same way you wouldn’t fault someone from India asking about your family. Introducing people to each other, people who could potentially work together, is the most valuable thing you can do, as it raises your value and theirs. LA people want (NEED!) to have powerful well-connected friends, to survive and thrive.

Not just LA but California is the most optimistic place on earth. The side-effects of this can confuse outsiders. When you say, “Will you come to my event?” or, “Want to help with this project?” - they will almost always say yes, full of enthusiasm, and actually 100% sincere, fully intending to be there, to help, whatever. They honestly and optimistically think that they will be there and do it. They have the best of intentions. But when it actually comes to that time, and they’ve optimistically said “yes!” to a dozen other things too, or perhaps they’re just nestled in the comfort of their California home, then… well… they reluctantly “flake” - and won’t follow through. Don’t get bitter and write them off as fake, or backstabbers. Just understand that it’s a side-effect of sincere optimism, and adjust your expectations accordingly.

messily asked: Since you're missing the LA tumblr meetup, obviously we need to do NYC drinks to make up for it!

I love this idea! I’m in NY for a blip of time (36 hours between touch down Tuesday morning and take off Wednesday afternoon) but would love to meet people for drinks on May 1st, as many people as are interested! Location recommendations welcome.

We’re gonna be in LA Tuesday night! Come grab a drink and say hello! RSVP HERE

I am gonna be here Tuesday night. If you’re my friend or not my friend and would like to be you should swing by and say hello!

WHY IS THIS HAPPENING WHILE I AM IN NYC? Cha Cha is close enough I could walk there, which means this is just unfair.
Everyone else: you know what to do.

Last week I hit this minor milestone.
Nine months ago I didn’t run. Arguably, I don’t run now — I speed walk or jog with an occasional sprint. But I do those things consistently, and enjoy them. I’ve developed opinions on different LA parks (I only track my mileage when I’m outside. Gyms don’t count, in an ironic turn), I’ve internalized the importance of stretching both before and after working out, and I’ve lowered my average pace by over three minutes per mile.
I’m proud of myself. Don’t get me wrong, I still have a BMI that gets me turned down for single-payer health insurance, I still have moments where I’m uncomfortable in my body, I still feel like I’m slowing people down when I exercise with them — but I’m more present in my body and in my life than I have been in a long time and I’m loving it.
I started going on walks as a way to make myself put down the internet. To be honest, I needed an activity that didn’t allow me any chance of seeing 9/11 anniversary coverage. My goals were simple but the rewards for changing my focus have been far outside the scope of what I expected.
I’ll check back in at 200 miles.

"‘People think it’s all about the mission, but it’s all about the team, really. When you do a film like this you have to make sure each character matters as much as the others, but in a different way. That was something that was really important to me. Making sure everyone mattered.’"

"It’s good because you have a daughter and no matter how progressive your politics are at home, she’s still at three or four years old saying I want to be a princess and I want to have a prince. Well, that’s okay, but you need to be able to beat him in a fight and that’s why you need to see [the Avengers]."

If you’ve got questions about how to build a project on the JBF site, we’ve got space kittens ready to help! By this we mean our example project, Cat-Tastrophe!, about a group of kittens that save the world from a planet-annihilating meteor, is waiting for you to love it and learn from it.
Wondering how long your synopsis should be? Not sure what to do about a masthead or background image? Don’t want to put up a script without seeing what one looks like on the site? Check out “Cat-Tastrophe” for answers!

We launch the trailer Wednesday. It’s spectacular.

Mr. Gaspin said that this year he and his 13-year-old son decided to try out the AMC series “The Walking Dead.” Hooked by the first two episodes, they set aside an hour at 9 each night to watch the first two years, hour by hour, which Mr. Gaspin had collected through every means available — some episodes from Netflix, some from iTunes, some recorded on the family DVR.

“We learned a new behavior,” Mr. Gaspin said. Finally they caught up to this season’s finale.

“We watched that live,” he said. “It was not nearly as good. The commercials broke the tension. We had watched the other episodes with blankets over our heads. I hate to say this to the AMC executives and everybody else in the business, but I will never watch ‘Walking Dead’ live again.”

"For Hollywood, romancing 12- and 13-year-old girls means seeming like the world’s nicest boy who, underneath it all, has the guts to stick up for you and do the right thing. But romancing 18-to-49-year-old women means seeming like the world’s toughest, strongest guy (a Marine!) who, underneath it all, is also gentle and kind. Girls young enough to be watching movies on the Disney Channel get the sweetness first and the hidden strength second; women old enough for a shower sex scene get the strength first and the big heart second."

Super interesting analysis. Other terrific quote, regarding sex:

In truth, sex-wise, you sell boys to girls by promising they won’t try anything. But you sell men to women by promising they will try anything.
